Generator Sizing: kW, kVA and Load Steps

Use real power, apparent power, power factor and starting demand to prepare a useful generator load schedule.

Factory overview

What we build and what we need from you.

kW describes real power used by the load; kVA describes apparent power carried by the electrical source. At 0.8 power factor, 30 kW corresponds to 37.5 kVA, but that conversion is only a rating reference. A generator must also tolerate motor starting, transformer inrush, nonlinear loads, step changes and the site environment.

01

Build the running-load schedule

Record each load in kW or kVA using its nameplate or manufacturer data. Add quantity, power factor, efficiency and whether it runs continuously or intermittently. Then mark the realistic simultaneous combination instead of simply adding every connected load.

02

Identify starting and transient loads

For motors, provide rated kW, voltage, phase, starting method and starting-current multiplier or manufacturer curve. Also identify transformers, UPS systems, welders and variable-frequency drives. Their transient or harmonic behavior may govern selection even when steady kW is lower.

03

Apply margin for a stated reason

Spare capacity can cover uncertainty, future load or transient performance, but one percentage does not fit every project. State why the margin is being used. Too little margin can cause poor response; too much capacity can leave a diesel set operating lightly for long periods.

04

Send the complete sizing inputs

Give our factory voltage, frequency, phase, duty, ambient temperature, altitude, load sequence and acceptable voltage or frequency dip. Use our calculators for preliminary arithmetic, then have critical and final selections reviewed by qualified engineers.
